The story of the Avatar has been an on-going one for thousands of years, with its first incarnation appearing in 12th century China. The last Airbender, an original story created by James Cameron and Michael Dante DiMartino, is set in a world that is divided into four different nations: Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation and Air Nomads. Air Nomads are a race off monk-like people who have the ability to “bend” one of the four elements which comprise our world: air being their particular element. However they were decimated by a ruthless Fire Nation General named Sozin 100 years before the show takes place. They have been forced to live on a floating island known as the Air Temple for all these years. Azula, the older sister of Princess Katara, is a ruthless and cunning Fire Nation Princess who has a power-hungry streak a mile wide. She was infatuated with the idea of ruling the entire planet after she came across her father’s book of Firebending techniques, which he hid away for safe keeping. When she saw the book she made up her mind - she would one day become Fire Lord and destroy her brother's airbending spirits so they will never threaten her own rule. Two main characters are Zuko, son of the Fire Lord Ozai, and Katara, daughter of the Southern Water Tribe chief. They are being trained to be deadly warriors in their respective academies. When they meet for the first time, Zuko is harsh with her because he believes that an outsider would not be able to master waterbending unlike a native of the tribe. Despite his coldness towards her, Katara develops a crush on Zuko and attempts to find ways to see him or talk with him. She later finds out that Zuko is actually her long-lost older brother Sokka had never met before they met on the Southern Water Tribe ship. Zuko does not know about this and when he sees her, he is in a state of shock at the resemblance they have in terms of looks. When they meet again, Katara is afraid that he'll reject her once he knows they were brothers. Zuko, however, denies it and hugs her crying. Their friendship develops when Sokka gets them in trouble for being on the ship without permission. The three set out to rejoin the others only to be caught by Azula and Mai. They are forced into an obstacle race that pits them against each other to see who is the best warrior in the nation's top military academy. Zuko and Katara eventually win and Zuko and Katara eventually become close friends. During a fight on the Fire Nation ship, Katara is badly wounded and is taken to the Fire Nation for recovery. When she wakes up, she finds herself locked in a jail cell with Zuko as Ba Sing Se's new Fire Lord. He tells her that he has been watching her since they first met as an outsider, and traces his hand down her face with a smile. The pair reach out to each other through letters that they send to one another, but the Fire Nation prohibits the use of firebending since it is considered treasonous against them and therefore forbidden to airbenders. cfa1e77820
